Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the nearest protected area to Kanungu Resort Hotel. Located in Southwestern Uganda, Bwindi is a lush rainforest park and lies on the rim of the rift valley. The park is set on an altitude of 1190-2607m, and its highest point is Rwamunyonyi Hill located on the Eastern gorilla trekking region (Ruhija).
Bwindi is a significant habitat to over 120 mammal species and these include the endangered mountain gorillas, side-striped jackals, golden cats, buffaloes, elephants, duikers, civets, yellow backed duikers, clawless otter, and bats, etc.
About 350 species of birds also share the same habitat with numerous mammal species in Bwindi. The different avifaunal species comprise of Albertine rift endemic species and resident birds. They include montane oriole, Rwenzori nightjars, black bee-eaters, Kivu ground thrush, handsome francolins, Doherty’s bush shrikes, Augur buzzard, white starred robin, grey cuckoo shrikes, African broadbill, black faced rufous warblers, blue headed sunbird, cinnamon chested bee-eaters, giant kingfishers, shelley’s crimson wings, yellow streaked greenbul, Rwenzori apalis, Neumann’s warblers, regal sunbird and more.
Things to do in Bwindi NP
While at Bwindi, expect to enjoy myriad of experiences including mountain gorilla trekking, bird watching, forest walks, Batwa cultural experience, gorilla habituation and cycling. As of 2024, Bwindi gorilla permits can be booked at USD 800 per person and obtaining one can be done at ease through a reliable tour operator on ground. The best time to go to see Bwindi Impenetrable Forest gorillas is from June to September or December, November to February.
