Bakiga Lodge, New Eco Lodge Opens in Bwindi

Bakiga Lodge

Bakiga Lodge, Ruhija – A Fantastic Location for enjoying all that Bwindi has to Offer.

Information was received last week of a new eco-lodge just started in Ruhija, Bwindi. Bakiga Lodge, the eco-lodge on the famous Bwindi Impenetrable National Park popular for its mountain gorillas, is part of a local NGO (Bakiga Community Project) and all profits are used for water development work in Kabale district.

Ruhija in Bwindi National Park is the home of the Bitukura and Oruzogo Gorilla groups. It also habituates the Kyaguriro gorilla group dedicated to research.  As well as the popular gorilla trekking activities, Bakiga Lodge is an ideal location for birding safaris, nature walks and opportunities to interact with the local community.

According to Craig Smith the lodge manager, he said “We are new, but fully operating now”. He added, The lodge is just a 5 minute drive from the Ruhija Gorilla tracking meeting point and perfectly located for all forest activities, including bird watching.

With 2 spacious twin tents which can accommodate up to 3 beds each, they have ensuite bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets. Each tent overlooks Bwindi forest across a valley and has its own balcony with spectacular views.

Main meal is a high quality western 3 course meal. Breakfast and packed lunch are provided for full board. Eat in the restaurant, relax in the lounge next to the fireplace or chill out on the restaurant balcony overlooking the forest. Drinks are available at the bar.

Rooms cost US$100 per person per night full board.

Things to do and See:

When asked about what to do and see in the area, Craig said, local tours and cultural activities can be arranged at Bakiga Lodge and may include;

Whether you are an earlier riser or prefer a late start, nature walks can be organised at your convenience and tailored to your interests. You meet your experienced UWA guide at the Ruhija gate which is a short walk from the Lodge.  You can then take a half day (4 hours) morning/afternoon or a full day walk through the forest.  Trails are available to spot monkeys such as the black-and-white colobus, adventure to Mubwindi Swamp hoping to see the Green Broadbill or you can discuss with your guide if you have any other specific interests.  Full day trails can also be taken to reach the highest peak in Bwindi, to enjoy stunning views, birding activities and is simply a wonderful location to eat lunch – there is something for everyone.

For those who are tired after a morning of trekking or birding, a relaxing afternoon can be spent interacting within the local community.  Local community tours can be arranged to visit local carpenters, brick makers, basket weavers, the local honey shop and tea plantation.  Or if you’re looking for a souvenir of your stay browse the local craft shops where you can find and buy a carved gorilla or two.  If you are with us on Tuesdays you can also experience the delights of the local market.

As an NGO we also offer gorilla tours and opportunities to participate in our local water projects. All profits of the lodge fund the water projects of the NGO.
