The Bizenga River is one of the few beautiful permanent rivers Uganda is blessed. This river lies in Buhoma region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Southwestern Uganda. It is accessible along Munyaga river trail just outside Bwindi. Bizenga River is best explored together with experienced guide.

Visitors on nature walk along Muyanga River trail can spend half an hour, beginning from Buhoma road in which Bizenga river flows to meet Muyanga river. The Muyanga river trail is one of the many most amazing forest trails tourists explore while on Uganda safari in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is popular for its tranquility and diverse primates plus bird species.

The Muyanga river trail to Bizenga river is best explored during the dry season. This is when there is no/less rains and the trail is kept drier and not slippery like it is during the wet season. This makes it easier to walk through and access the beautiful Bizenga river while also sighting numerous primates, birds to mention but a few.

Bizenga river being in Buhoma region, tourists can combine their guided nature walks with gorilla trekking to explore the 4 habituated gorilla families in this northern sector of Bwindi. The groups here include Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe and gorilla permits are available for booking at US$700.

There is also possibility of visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park for game viewing and you spot the tree climbing lions. Buhoma area is approximately 3-4 hours’ drive away from Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Other than the Muyanga river trail that leads tourists to Bizenga river, other trails to explore in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park include Muzubijiro loop trail, Ivy river trail, water trail, Rushura hill trail and many more.

Access to Buhoma region to visit Bizenga River

From Kampala to Buhoma sector in Kanungu district, it is about 540kms and this is approximately 8-9 hours’ drive. Or you can drive to Buhoma from Kigali via Katuna/Chanika border through Kabale/Kisoro town.
